Integrated Workforce Management Solution 'Shiftee' Sees Rising Interest as More Companies Adopt Hybrid Work Environments

The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in an era where employees alternate between in-office and remote work. As a result, workforce management systems have become essential for businesses. With more companies adopting hybrid work environments that blend office-based and remote work, interest in Shiftee, a cloud-based workforce management solution, is on the rise.

A Specialized Focus on Workforce Management

Shiftee, a cloud-based workforce management platform, is a fast-growing startup in South Korea’s time and attendance management market. Its key strength lies in its adaptability across various industries and business sizes, despite differing labor laws and regulations across countries.

As a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) solution, Shiftee overcomes challenges related to specific regulations, work environments, national policies, cultural differences, and industry types. Currently, it is used in over 30 countries by more than 150,000 businesses. From the outset, Shiftee has been designed with a specialized focus on one of the three core HR domains—workforce management—ensuring a sophisticated and comprehensive approach. The platform integrates all essential workforce management functions, including scheduling, leave management, electronic contracts, and request-approval systems, into a single interface. This allows companies to optimize their workforce policies and structures efficiently. Even businesses with both office staff and field workers can manage their workforce seamlessly using a unified solution.

Shiftee is also increasing its interoperability with other software solutions. Through Open API (which enables external developers and users to integrate data) and SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol), Shiftee allows seamless integration with ERP HR systems, connecting organizational structures and payroll data efficiently. Furthermore, it integrates with global collaboration tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Calendar, enabling employees to share work schedules and leave information while enhancing productivity.

Shiftee serves over 150,000 businesses, including major corporations such as Mirae Asset, SK Networks, and Lotte Shopping, as well as leading tech companies like Kakao, WeWork, Viva Republica (operator of Toss), and Woowa Brothers (operator of Baemin). Notably, Shiftee achieved profitability within just three years after securing two rounds of seed funding. Since its launch in July 2016, the company’s revenue skyrocketed by 800% year-over-year in 2019. The following year, revenue grew by more than 300%, while the number of paid customers increased by over 400%. Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Shiftee recorded its highest-ever financial performance.

Shiftee’s success can be attributed to its convenient workforce management tools tailored to various work models. CEO Seung-won Shin explains, “Shiftee allows employees working remotely or from home to easily track their working hours via mobile or web applications. By utilizing the timeclock area setting feature, users can designate their home or a satellite office as a workplace, eliminating the need to manually adjust their work location for each shift. Employees simply clock in and out within the designated location boundary.”

Shiftee also offers a “deemed work feature,” enabling companies to predefine remote work schedules. This feature ensures that pre-scheduled remote work hours are recognized as actual working hours, addressing challenges in accurately tracking remote employees' work times. For instance, users can set predefined locations for commuting, such as starting the day in the office and then working from a satellite office or home in the afternoon.

Shin adds, “Beyond time and attendance tracking, Shiftee provides essential workforce management features such as leave management, request-approval workflows, electronic contracts, and payroll management. What sets Shiftee apart is its ability to offer enterprise-level functionality that can be used flexibly by businesses of all sizes.”

Shiftee is committed to enhancing its solution to support efficient workforce management across various industries, including office work and field-based sectors. This year, the company plans to extend its services to industries such as manufacturing, retail, theme parks, construction, and logistics. Additionally, Shiftee aims to further refine its platform to ensure businesses of all sizes and industries can easily manage their entire workforce using a single, specialized solution.

CEO Interview: From Time and Attendance Management to a Comprehensive Workforce Management Platform

Among various HR technology segments, workforce management solutions are emerging as a key area of focus. According to a global workforce management software market report by Research Insight, the global workforce management market was valued at $2.44 billion in 2018 and is projected to grow to $5.25 billion by 2026. The primary goal of workforce management is to help organizations prioritize strategic objectives, anticipate workforce challenges, mitigate risks, and maximize operational efficiency. Basic functions such as scheduling, time tracking, data analysis, and compliance management are just the beginning.

Advanced technologies enable businesses to predict staffing needs, preventing overstaffing and excessive overtime. Workforce management solutions also play a crucial role in identifying scheduling gaps in advance, ensuring vacancies are filled before they impact operations. Ultimately, the goal is to operate a more efficient and productive workforce while ensuring compliance with evolving labor laws and regulations. Through workforce management solutions, companies can optimize efficiency and productivity to stay ahead of the competition.

While South Korean businesses are familiar with time and attendance management, the broader concept of workforce management remains relatively new. CEO Seung-won Shin emphasizes, “Our goal is to establish Shiftee as the ‘Kronos of Asia,’ making workforce management an integral part of business operations across the region.”
